Here is a review of the amount of plastic trash generated by a conscientious environmentalist in one randomly selected week. Now don't get us wrong, we don't hate plastics. We think plastics are amazing materials. But we also think that surely humans can come up with smarter ways of packing food and other items. In this weekly stash of trash we find plastics of all kinds. Water bottles, thin film for vegetables, single use PET or LDPE containers, and strips that make the mind boggle. While some of the plastic is recyclable - IF and only IF it gets sorted AND the city has a recycling program that works. A lot of the plastic in this plastic bag of trash will likely live on forever. Some of it will degrade into smaller micro plastics and enter water streams while other plastic will add to mounds and mountains in landfills.
